For families shortlisting schools
Choosing a school in East Delhi: what to check.
Nine things worth comparing at every school you visit, and the questions to ask. Each one links to Mayo's own answer, so you can compare like for like.
- 01
Board and classes
- Which board the school follows, and whether it runs every class your child will need, up to Class XII.
- Which streams are offered in Classes XI and XII, so you don't have to move schools later.
- 02
Admission age and dates
- The age cut-off for the class you are applying to, and the date it is measured on.
- When forms open and close, what the assessment or interaction involves, and which documents you need.
- 03
Fees and what they include
- The full yearly cost: admission, tuition, transport and any one-time charges, in writing.
- How fees are paid, and whether there are sibling or early-payment terms.
- 04
Transport
- Whether a bus stops near your home, the pickup and drop times, and how long your child will be on the bus.
- Who travels on the bus with the children, and how you can reach the transport desk.
- 05
Class size and teachers
- How many children are in a section, and how many teachers and support staff there are for them.
- Who teaches the senior classes, and how long they have been with the school.
- 06
Exam preparation
- Whether JEE, NEET or other preparation happens inside the school timetable, or needs outside coaching.
- What it costs on top of school fees, and how much travel it adds to your child's day.
- 07
Workload and wellbeing
- How heavy the daily school bag is, how much homework comes home, and whether there are activity days.
- What the school does for sport, arts and clubs, and how much time they get each week.
- 08
Safety
- Gate and visitor checks, CCTV, medical support on campus, and staff background checks.
- How the school tells parents about an incident, and how quickly.
- 09
Results
- Board results for several years, not just the best one, and how many students sat the exam.
- Where students went next: colleges, entrance exams and courses.
Questions to ask on a campus visit
- Can I see a classroom while lessons are on?
- How do teachers tell me how my child is doing, and how often?
- What happens if my child needs extra help, or more of a challenge?
- Can I talk to a parent whose child already studies here?
- What will my child's normal day look like, from bus to bus?
