CBSE syllabus for Classes 1 to 5

The subjects, the NCERT books and how primary children are assessed — no board exams, plenty of activity.

IN SHORT

In CBSE primary classes children study two languages, mathematics, the world around them (environmental studies), art, and health and physical education. Assessment is continuous and activity-based — there are no board exams. NCERT has been introducing new textbooks under the National Curriculum Framework 2023, class by class.

How children are assessed

Teachers watch and record progress through the year — oral work, projects, worksheets and portfolios — rather than one big exam. Report cards describe what a child can do, not just marks.

Questions parents ask

Are there exams in CBSE Classes 1 to 5?
