PARENT GUIDE · HOMEWORK

Helping with homework without doing it

A routine that works, how much to help at each age, and how to stop homework becoming a nightly battle.

IN SHORT

Give homework a fixed time and a quiet place, help your child start rather than finish, and ask questions instead of giving answers. If the same work is a struggle night after night, tell the teacher — homework that a child cannot do alone is information the school needs.

Your role
Coach, not solver
Routine
Same time, same place
If stuck
Tell the teacher

Set up the routine

  • Same time every day, after a snack and a break
  • A quiet table, phones away
  • Short tasks first to build momentum
  • A check of the bag and diary when done

How much to help

Classes I–IIISit nearby, read instructions together, check at the end
Classes IV–VIIIHelp plan, then step back; check that it's done, not that it's perfect
Classes IX–XIIBe available; help with planning and time, not content

When your child is stuck

  • Ask: what does the question want? What do you already know?
  • Look at the example in the book together
  • Let them leave one question for the teacher
  • Never do the work for them — the teacher needs to see where they struggle

How Mayo helps

Twenty-one Bagless Days a session for LKG to Class III, and a library period on every primary class's timetable, keep reading and learning a habit, not a chore.

Questions parents ask

Should I help my child with homework?

Help them start and plan, ask questions rather than give answers, and let the teacher see where they struggle. Doing it for them hides the problem.

What if homework takes too long?

Tell the class teacher. If the same work is a struggle night after night, the school needs to know.

Questions about academics?

Leave your number and the admissions team calls you back within one working day — seat status in your child’s class, the fee sheet and your nearest bus stop.

One call, no follow-up pressure. Your number is never shared.
