Ten questions worth asking on a school visit
A school visit is short, and it is easy to come away with a good feeling and no answers. A few questions help.
Ask how many children are in a class, and how many adults are in the room for the youngest classes. Ask what a normal day looks like, hour by hour. Ask how the school tells parents about progress, and how often.
Ask about the bus: which stop is nearest to you, what time the pickup is, and who travels on the bus with the children. Ask about safety at the gate and how visitors are checked in.
Ask what the school does when a child is struggling, and when a child is ahead. Ask about homework in the early years. Ask what fees cover and what is charged separately, and when fees are due.
Write the answers down. When you compare two or three schools afterwards, it is the specific answers that help, not the impression of the reception area.
