A percentage is your marks out of the maximum. A percentile compares you with everyone who sat the exam — 90 percentile means you scored as well as or better than 90% of candidates.

An NTA percentile tells you the share of candidates who scored at or below you. So a 99 percentile among 12 lakh candidates means about 12,000 scored higher — an approximate rank of 12,000. Category ranks, ties and session normalisation shift the real figure.
