Changing schools: helping your child settle

What to do before the first day, what to expect in the first weeks, and how to tell normal nerves from a real problem.

IN SHORT

Visit the school together before the first day, practise the new route and routine, keep the first weeks calm at home, and talk to the class teacher early. Most children settle within four to six weeks; if your child is still very unhappy after that, or stops eating or sleeping well, meet the teacher together.

Before the first day

  • Visit the school together and find the classroom, washroom and gate
  • Practise the bus stop or route and the new wake-up time a week ahead
  • Get the uniform, books and bag ready early so the morning is calm
  • Talk positively about the move — and let them say what they will miss

The first weeks

Tiredness, tears and some clinginess are normal at first. Ask open questions — who did you sit with, what was the best part — instead of "Did you like it?". Keep evenings simple and protect sleep.

When to talk to the school

  • Your child is still very unhappy after a month
  • They are not eating or sleeping well
  • They mention being left out or teased
  • Work from the old school doesn't match the new syllabus

How Mayo helps

Mayo admits children during the session when a class has a seat, and parent-teacher meetings are on the school calendar. Families can reach the admissions office by phone or WhatsApp.
