How to become a chartered accountant

The stream to pick after Class 10, the entrance exams, and the route from school to chartered accountant.

IN SHORT

Chartered accountancy is run by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). After Class 12 students register for CA Foundation, then CA Intermediate, a period of practical training (articleship), and CA Final. Commerce with accountancy is the usual route, though any stream can apply.

Start in school

Accountancy in Class 11 and 12 is the CA Foundation's base. Students who keep up practice of journal entries and financial statements find the Foundation far easier.

Questions parents ask

Can a science student become a CA?

Yes. Any stream can register for CA Foundation after Class 12, though commerce students know the accounting basics already.
