Social media and teenagers

Age limits, privacy, sleep and studies — and how to agree rules that last.

IN SHORT

Most social apps set 13 as the minimum age. For teenagers the biggest risks are lost sleep, comparison and contact with strangers. Agree a family plan together: phones out of the bedroom at night, private accounts, and a promise that they can tell you about anything worrying without losing the phone.

  • Location sharing off
  • Restricted messages from strangers

Keep talking

Ask what they enjoy online, not only how long they spend. A teenager who expects a calm response is far more likely to tell you when something goes wrong.

Questions parents ask

Where do I report cyberbullying or online fraud?

On cybercrime.gov.in or the national helpline 1930, and tell the school.
