Transfer certificate for a new school

What a TC is, how to get it from the old school, and the rules that differ by class.

IN SHORT

A transfer certificate (TC) is the document your child's last school issues when they leave: it records the class passed, the dates of admission and leaving, and that dues are cleared. Ask the old school in writing and clear any dues; most issue it within a few working days. Up to Class VIII, the Right to Education Act says a delay in getting a TC must not delay or deny admission. For Classes IX to XII, the new school will need it.

How to get it

  • Write to the old school asking for the TC, with the reason and the date of leaving
  • Clear fees and return library books and anything else on loan
  • Collect the TC with the last report card
  • Keep a scanned copy and the original for the new school

Moving from another state or board

For a move from another state or board, some schools ask for the TC to be countersigned by the education officer of the old school's district. Ask the new school what it needs before you leave.

A move between CBSE schools is usually simplest: the TC and report card are enough.

Classes X and XII

Students are registered with CBSE for the board exam through their school, so changing school in Class X or XII is allowed only in limited cases, such as a family move. Call the new school before applying.

Questions parents ask

Is a TC compulsory for admission?

For Classes IX to XII, yes. Up to Class VIII, the Right to Education Act says admission must not be delayed or denied because a TC is delayed.

How long does a school take to issue a TC?

Usually a few working days once dues are cleared.

Does a TC from another state need countersignature?

Some schools ask for it; check with the new school before you leave the old one.

Can my child change school in Class 10?

Only in limited cases, because of CBSE board registration. Call the new school first.
