Nursery age relaxation in Delhi

If your child's birthday falls just outside the age limit, here is how relaxation works and how to ask.

IN SHORT

Age relaxation lets a school admit a child who is just outside the age limit. Recent Delhi Directorate of Education notices for entry-level admission have let the head of a school relax the lower and upper age limits by up to 30 days, at their discretion. It is not automatic: check the notice for your year, and ask each school in writing before you apply.

What it could mean for Nursery 2027-28

Without relaxation, Nursery is for children born 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024.

With the full 30 days on both sides, a school could consider children born from 2 March 2023 to 30 April 2024.

Whether a school uses it, and for whom, is the school's decision.

How to ask

  • Read the Directorate of Education's entry-level notice for the year: it states whether relaxation is allowed
  • Write to the school's admissions office with the child's birth certificate, before the form closes
  • Ask whether the school applies relaxation, and whether it changes the class your child would join
  • Keep the school's reply with your application

If relaxation is not given

A child who is too young simply applies the following year; a child over the upper limit applies for the next class. Neither costs the child anything — it keeps them with classmates of the same age.

At Mayo

Nursery: at least 3 and under 4 years old on 31 March of the year the session starts.

Ask the admissions office about your child's date of birth before applying; the office will tell you which class fits.

Nursery admission for 2027-28 is open until 15 December 2026 (60 seats this round).
