Reading with your child at home

Ten minutes a day, the right books, and a few habits that make readers for life.

IN SHORT

Reading aloud for ten to fifteen minutes a day is the single best thing parents can do for a child's language and later schoolwork. Let children choose books, talk about the pictures, and read in any language you are comfortable in.

By age

3–4Picture books, rhymes, naming things on each page
5–6Simple stories, letter sounds, finding familiar words
7–8Children read to you; take turns page by page

Keep it fun

  • Same time every day — bedtime works well
  • Re-reading favourites is good, not lazy
  • Visit a library or bookshop together
  • Let them see you reading

Questions parents ask

When should my child start reading on their own?

Most children read simple words between five and seven. Reading aloud together before then matters more than early drills.
